Performing Under Pressure: From Sport to Business

Today, I worked with some of Berlin’s best junior rowers, invited by Landesruderverband Berlin e.V. to help the next generation perform when it matters most.
Our focus: recognising pressure, resetting after mistakes and building routines that turn nerves into purposeful action.
What we worked on
- Recognising pressure: Identifying the thoughts and physical signals that show up before an important performance.
- Experiencing it firsthand: Using a timed challenge to explore how pressure changes our attention and reactions.
- Learning from setbacks: Analysing Sifan Hassan’s response to adversity and discussing what we could apply ourselves.
- Refocusing after mistakes: Choosing a useful next action instead of getting stuck on what went wrong.
- Building a personal plan: Creating simple routines and “if/then” strategies to practise before the next competition.
The same questions matter in any team: How do we respond when a plan breaks down? Where does our attention go? And what helps us take the next useful step?
These skills reach far beyond the boat. Whether you’re facing a race, a crucial presentation or a demanding team project, the challenge is familiar: staying focused when expectations are high.
